The Talking Quest

Encouraging Mia's communication has been a marathon team effort at the Suares farm for many years.  Learning a range of signing gestures proved useful for everyone - particularly handy for calling cuppa time across the back paddock when the voice wouldn't quite carry. But helping Mia find her voice, to be able to construct clear and useful complete sentences has been our ultimate aim.  Now with the help of some fabulous compatriots we are hearing the rewards - and she walks a little taller with every success!

This is Mia's story, and it is shared with her full knowledge and permission.  At the age of 35, Mia finally received a diagnosis of Monosomy 1p36 Deletion Syndrome - with the accompanying advice to Google it! We hope by chronicling her journey with its many challenges and achievements we can help build on the available knowledge and understanding of 1p36 for our fellow travellers and the broader community.

The Elemental Question

How did I get here?!?

Dairying in Australia has never been an easy occupation; but has possibly never been more challenging than during the past few years as farmers grapple with the triple helix of global financial crises, climate change and corporate mismanagement. Amid the turmoil of the most recent dairying debacle, it seemed a constructive and somewhat therapeutic project for some likeminded gal pals, who are also proud and passionate farmers, to recall and record their farming journey. Mine begins.....
